  Tom Murray

Tom serves as the Director of Innovation for Future Ready Schools, a project of the Alliance for Excellent Education, located in Washington, DC. He has testified before the United States Congress and works alongside that body and the US Senate, the White House, the US Department of Education and state departments of education, corporations, and school districts throughout the country to implement student-centered, personalized learning while helping to lead Future Ready and Digital Learning Day. Murray serves as a regular conference keynote, was named one of “20 to Watch” by NSBA, the “Education Policy Person of the Year” by the Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2015 and “Education Thought Leader of the Year” in 2017. His latest book, Learning Transformed, was released in 2017 with ASCD.


General Session Description:
Having no historical precedent, the current speed of technological breakthroughs has lead to the coming age of workplace automation, dramatically altering the world of work that our students will enter upon graduation. With the vast disparities of inequity that have existed for centuries, all that is known about how students learn, and the predictions regarding the world that our students will face tomorrow, utilizing a traditional, one-size-fits-all approach to teaching and learning is educational malpractice. Built upon the foundation of leadership and school culture, a redesigned learning experience fundamentally shifts the teaching and learning paradigm to one that is personal, while altering the use of authentic assessments, how technology is leveraged, the spaces in which the learning occurs, the way educators grow professionally, how schools collaborate with the community, and ultimately, the sustainability of the system as a whole. In this keynote, Thomas C. Murray will dissect these eight keys, which each serve as a puzzle piece for redesigning the learning experience, to unlock tomorrow’s schools so that today’s modern learners leave ready to create new industries, find new cures, and solve world problems. We must create tomorrow’s schools today and you are part of the solution.
  Margaret Golden

Margaret Golden, Ed.D. is a Professor Emerita at Dominican University of California and a facilitator for the Center for Courage and Renewal. She directs Courage to Teach®, a professional development program of seasonal retreats intended for educators’ reflection and renewal, and Leading Together, a professional development program for school leaders. Both programs are based on the work of esteemed author and educator, Parker J. Palmer.


Margaret’s passions include educational equity and the study of social emotional development and mindfulness in children and adults. She is currently exploring the relationship between the Principles and Practices of a Circle of Trust® and the creation of trustworthy spaces for having heartfelt, often difficult conversations.  She has co-authored and edited two books, Teach Our Children Well: Essential Strategies for Urban Classrooms (Heinemann), and Teaching and Learning from the Inside Out: Revitalizing Ourselves and Our Institutions (Jossey-Bass). 


Margaret has been an invited speaker at numerous conferences. In the spring of 2015, she was invited to Vietnam to speak at the Vietnam National Institute of Educational Sciences (VNIES), the think-tank for the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam (MOET) in the areas of strategies, policies, and curriculum development, and at Vietnam National University, Hanoi College of Education. While in Hanoi, Dr. Golden also facilitated a retreat for educators at the United Nations International School (UNIS) titled: Honoring the Teachers Heart.


In April of 2018, she was honored by the Dominican Alumni Association with the Sister Aquinas Nimitz, O.P. Award for outstanding service, commitment, and dedication to all members of the Dominican Community.

General Session Description:
We know that helping teachers to experience their school community as collaborative and supportive, and their work as joyful, are key to helping students succeed, both in learning and in life.  Research indicates that a key variable in the success of a school is the degree of relational trust evident among the adults in that school. Dimensions of relational trust—shared beliefs about respect, competence, personal regard for others, and integrity—are foundational to whether or not a school can raise the bar for all. Yet we know that relational trust and collaborative adult school community are not easily created and maintained in today’s educational climate. Trust is built when school leaders create and sustain opportunities for ongoing, productive, and socially supportive interactions among adults in the school community. When we Lead Together we see some remarkable changes in schools and classrooms.

Jean Dyszel
 General Session C: Tuesday, 12:30pm to 2:00pm:  "Future Ready Pa Index"
Dr. Jean Dyszel is a lifelong educator. Starting her career as an English teacher, she was a middle and high school administrator, federal programs supervisor, human resources administrator, and retired as an assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in West Shore School District.

Jean's primary work over the last several years has concentrated on curriculum and instruction. As a consultant with the Pennsylvania Department of Education, she has managed the Standards Aligned System (SAS) and coordinates the SAS Institute.

Teaching and learning have remained her focus throughout her career. Jean has provided leadership in many arenas over the last several decades, whether creating opportunities to build standards-aligned curriculum or working with Pennsylvania educators to increase the rigor of instruction.

Jean's primary role as a PDE consultant is the management of the Standards Aligned System (SAS) portal. Other projects include the planning of the SAS Institute and the implementation of the Quality School Leaders hiring process.
General Session Description:

Future Ready PA Index is designed as a holistic school evaluation tool, but the real impact lies with how we as curriculum leaders translate the Index into meaningful instructional initiatives in our schools.  We will consider how we can move our students into future readiness and consider both what we already do well, what we need to do differently, and what may need to change.
